In early 20th century London, artist Kingdom Swann becomes a photographer after his paintings are rejected by a leading gallery. Swann is encouraged by his unscrupulous assistant to photograph nudes in classical settings, and gains scornful notoriety when his assistant sells the most risqué photos to a men's magazine.
